Drainage is the most important technical consideration in a backyard turf installation. Houston and the surrounding area receives heavy rainfall. A backyard turf system that does not drain properly will develop standing water on the surface after rain events, which is both a usability problem and a long-term turf performance issue. We build backyard turf systems with a properly graded compacted aggregate base. The base is pitched to direct water away from structures and toward existing drainage on your property. We confirm the drainage direction during the site assessment before any excavation begins. In yards with poor natural drainage, we may recommend additional drainage infrastructure before proceeding with turf installation. We will be direct with you about what the site needs rather than installing over a drainage problem and leaving it for you to discover later.
The aggregate base we compact is typically 3 to 4 inches of crushed granite or class II base material. On top of that goes a weed barrier, then the turf itself, then infill. The infill we spread depends on the application: silica sand for general use, crumb rubber for added cushion in play areas, and specific blended infill options for pet areas.
