Artificial Turf Infill: The Hidden Decision That Shapes Your Install
When most people picture artificial turf installation, they think about the turf product itself -- the blade shape, color, and pile height. What often gets less attention is the infill: the material that gets spread and brushed into the turf fibers to stabilize them, add weight, and improve performance characteristics. Infill is not optional in most installations. Choosing the right type can affect how the turf performs, how hot it gets, how long it lasts, and how safe it is for your specific use case.

Why Infill Matters
Artificial turf fibers are long, thin polymer strands attached to a backing. Without infill, those fibers flop to one side, the surface compresses under foot traffic, and the whole system loses its performance characteristics quickly. Infill serves multiple functions:
- Holds turf fibers upright
- Adds weight and stability to the turf system, reducing movement
- Provides cushioning (in some infill types)
- Modulates surface temperature (varies dramatically by infill type)
- Contributes to drainage rates
- Affects surface hardness and sports performance characteristics
Crumb Rubber (SBR Rubber)
What it is: Granulated recycled automobile tires, also called tire crumb or SBR (styrene-butadiene rubber).
Performance: Crumb rubber is the original high-performance infill for sports applications. It provides excellent cushioning, is relatively affordable, and performs well from a pure sports biomechanics standpoint. Athletic facilities, soccer fields, and football fields have used it extensively.
The heat problem: Crumb rubber is the worst infill option for surface temperature in Texas. Black rubber granules absorb solar radiation extremely efficiently. Turf with crumb rubber infill reaches the highest surface temperatures of any infill type -- easily 160 to 180 degrees Fahrenheit in direct Texas summer sun. For residential applications in Texas where children or pets will use the surface, this is a significant concern.
Other considerations: Environmental and health concerns about tire crumb have been raised in public discourse. The research on health risks is genuinely mixed, but many municipalities and some states have restricted crumb rubber use in certain applications. For residential backyards, many Texas homeowners are moving away from crumb rubber regardless of regulatory requirements.
Best for: Athletic fields and sports complexes where cushioning performance is the priority and heat is managed through scheduled use times and cooling protocols.
Silica Sand
What it is: Washed and dried sand with rounded grain edges, the simplest and most affordable infill option.
Performance: Sand stabilizes turf fibers effectively but provides minimal additional cushioning. It adds weight and firmness to the surface. For decorative and moderate-use residential applications, it performs adequately.
Temperature: Silica sand is one of the cooler infill options. Light-colored sand reflects more solar radiation than black rubber, keeping surface temperatures lower. Still warmer than natural grass, but meaningfully cooler than crumb rubber.
Limitations: Sand does not provide the cushioning of rubber or organic infills. It can compact over time and develop a harder surface feel. In areas with pet use, wet sand can clump and drag out on pet paws.
Best for: Decorative residential landscapes, low-traffic areas, putting greens where surface firmness is appropriate, and any application where heat reduction is a priority over maximum cushioning.
Cork Infill
What it is: Ground cork bark, a natural and renewable material.
Performance: Cork provides good cushioning comparable to crumb rubber while being significantly lighter. It is antimicrobial, which is relevant for pet use areas and indoor applications. Cork is biodegradable and does not have the health concerns associated with crumb rubber.
Temperature: Cork-infilled turf runs significantly cooler than crumb rubber. Some studies have measured surface temperatures 30 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit lower with cork infill compared to crumb rubber under the same conditions.
Limitations: Cork is more expensive than silica sand or crumb rubber. It can compact over time and may need periodic top-up.
Best for: Residential backyards in Texas where both heat and health concerns about synthetic infill drive the decision. An excellent choice for pet areas and yards used by children.
Coconut Fiber (Coir)
What it is: Ground coconut husks, another natural organic infill option.
Performance: Similar to cork in terms of cushioning and temperature performance. Naturally antimicrobial and resistant to mold and mildew. Breaks down more slowly than you might expect from a natural material.
Temperature: Compares favorably with cork for heat management.
Best for: Similar applications to cork -- residential backyards, pet areas, and any application where organic, lower-temperature infill is preferred.
Zeolite
What it is: A naturally occurring porous mineral. Sometimes used as a component in infill blends, particularly for pet areas.
Special property: Zeolite absorbs ammonia, which makes it specifically valuable in pet areas where urine odor is a concern. It can be recharged with water, releasing the absorbed ammonia and regaining its odor-control properties.
Best for: Mixed into infill blends for dog runs and pet areas in combination with sand or organic infill.
Infill by Application
Residential backyard (Texas, family use): Cork or coconut fiber infill, or silica sand. Prioritize lower surface temperatures. Cork is the premium choice; sand is the budget option.
Pet areas: Cork or coir with zeolite component for odor management.
Sports fields and athletic applications: Crumb rubber or sand-rubber blends where cushioning performance is the priority and use times can be managed to avoid peak heat.
Putting greens: Silica sand for appropriate surface firmness.
Infill Installation and Spreading
Infill is spread onto the turf surface after installation using mechanical spreaders and then brushed in with a power broom to work it down into the fiber base. This process requires equipment and skill to achieve even distribution. Infill Depth: How Much Do You Need?
Infill depth requirements vary by turf pile height and application. General guidelines:
- For a 1.5-inch pile height turf (common residential): approximately 1 inch of infill depth is standard, leaving the top 0.5 inch of fiber above the infill level to stand upright and provide the visual appearance
- For a 2-inch pile height turf: approximately 1.25 to 1.5 inches of infill
- For sports turf with shock pad: infill depth is less critical because the shock pad handles impact absorption; lighter infill is used primarily for fiber stability
Insufficient infill allows fiber blades to flop laterally, creating a flat, matted appearance. Excessive infill buries the fiber tips and creates a coarse, rough surface feel. Getting the depth right during installation is part of what distinguishes a quality installation from a mediocre one.
Infill and Texas Drainage Requirements
Texas weather creates high peak drainage demand during storm events. Infill type affects drainage rate through the turf system. Coarser infill with larger particle sizes (some sands, crumb rubber) drains faster than finer infill.
